Carter, who commutes to work in Omaha, Neb., said he likes to stop in Council Bluffs on the way.
"I usually stop and get cheap gas in Council Bluffs," he said.
He purchased the winning ticket at U-Stop Convenience Shop, 1928 Sherwood Drive in Council Bluffs and claimed the prize at the
Iowa Lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs. He didn't realize he'd won a big prize until a week after the drawing!
"I had a bunch of receipts that I had in my billfold," he recalled. "I guess I didn't realize I had a ticket there.
So I went online and checked it. I had to run down to the gas station to validate it and, yep!"
The winning Powerball numbers for the March 19 drawing were: 6-8-29-41-49. The Powerball was 42. The Power Play® multiplier was 4.
Because Carter played the Power Play option, he multiplied his $10,000 prize by four to win $40,000 instead! "I always play the
Power Play," he said. Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot) up to five times. The cost is $1 per
play.
Just before the Powerball numbers are drawn, the Power Play wheel is spun. Slots on the wheel list the numbers 2 through 5,
indicating the amount prizes (except the jackpot) will be multiplied if that number is drawn.
Carter said he plans to use his winnings this summer to buy a house.
